The Munros

What is a Munro?

A Munro is a Scottish peak over 3000ft. The Munros were first walked and catalogued by Sir Hugh Munro in 1891. He noted 236 peaks, where as now there are 284 (at time of writing). Of course new mountains haven’t just ‘grown’ out of the earth, but advances in technology and surveying summit tops is much more advanced these days, and so the list grew as more peaks were surveyed properly. In 1997 the Scottish Mountaineering Club (SMC) promoted 8 additional Munro tops and demoted one, bringing the total to 284 Munros.

Why the Munros?

The Munros are truly unique. They all offer something different and all are amazingly beautiful. They offer a chance to ‘get away’ from it all, build up excellent fitness and a chance to stretch the eye as well as the legs! They also offer an amazing challenge that will physically and mentally test you if you decide to tick them all off. The term ‘Munro Bagger’ is a term used to describe someone who is trying to complete the entire Munro list. For some people this can take years or even a lifetime!

Munro Packages

We offer various day/s and weekend walking packages to suit. Because the Munros are located in different areas then the prices may vary, depending on transport costs. Talking of which, transport can be arranged to collect and drop you off, also if you require the hire of walking equipment then this can be catered for. We aim to do as much walking, as ‘you’ the client want to get done. Of course realistic goals need to be discussed depending on various criteria including, time, weather fitness, and does the Munro require a ‘scrambling’ approach? For example parts of the Cuillins and the traverse of the Cuillin Ridge requires hefty amounts of scrambling. This of course isn’t a problem but a chat about your experience and or a scrambling refresher day may be advisable before attempting the Cuillin Ridge. It’s quite possibly the best ridge scramble that the UK has to offer, but should not be attempted lightly and an established level of fitness is required to really make the most of this magnificent experience.

All of our instructors are experienced, friendly, supportive, helpful, and keen! And above all have you and your safety in mind. We hope to see you out in the Scottish hills, please feel free to get in touch to discuss your requirements, were happy to help.

Have a look at the chart below. This is the full Munro list.
