Hill Walking in the Lake District & the UK

Hill walking is a fantastic way to really see the fells in all their glory. Below is a range of days and courses available. Remember these days are suitable for all, no matter your level of experience or fitness, you don't have to climb the highest fell, Scafell Pike to see the Lake District. Days can also be arranged in any part of the UK depending on where you want to walk. Snowdon, Ben Nevis the Cullins to name a few. Call to discuss your requirements.

Gentle Walks & Lake Shores

Days are suited for people who want to see the Lake District without the effort of climbing a mountain to do so! We stick to low level footpaths and bridleways whilst taking in some beautiful scenery. Some of the best views of the Lakes are seen this way. Look at most outdoor calendar shots!

Mountains & Peaks

These days are ideal for people who may want to get a little higher and deeper into the fells. I can choose a suitable walk for you or maybe you have one in mind that you would like to try. Whichever you choose we will discuss and come up with a plan. Some suggestions include: Helvellyn using Striding and Swirral Edge; Blencathra via Sharp Edge; or Scafell and Scafell Pike.

 Expeditions & Wild Camping

These days are designed for people who really want to spend a bit more time in the hills alongside getting to sleep out in the mountains in a remote location. We will either spend the night in a tent, a bothy-type of barn used by hill walkers and climbers to rest for the night, orbivvy-waterproof cover which has the advantage of being lighter and has the benefit to be used almost anywhere. We will decide this depending on individual requirements and weather. Go ahead give it a go, you will come away feeling like you’ve had a true mountain experience. All equipment can be hired...beards aren’t necessary!

Mountain Navigation & Skills

Time spent looking at getting your navigation skills upto speed is essential when out in the hills. We look at the skills needed to navigate round the UK hills. Starting with map orientation and compass techniques, we will also look at taking bearings and relating them to the map, together with contour interpretation and navigation strategies. We can also look at what to do if you go astray with your navigation and what to do when the cloud comes in...

These days are usefull if you are working towards your Mountain Leader qualification. Maybe it has been a while since you practised, if so can be used as a refresher, or maybe your assessment is coming up. All aspects of the ML (Mountain Leader) syllabus can be covered.

Rope Work Used for Hill Walking /  Steep Ground

On this day we look at when to use a hill rope or 'confidence' rope whilst out in the mountains. Maybe you enjoy easy scrambling by yourself and with others but feel that sometimes it would be good to safeguard friends on the steeper sections of ground. We will cover the correct ways taught and endorsed by the Mountain Leader Training Board (MLTB). Places we use to practice this are: Blencathra via Sharp Edge; Helvellyn via Striding and Swiral edges; Jack's Rake on Pavey Ark; and Crib Goch on Snowdon Wales.

Night Navigation

On this we look at the skills needed for navigating around the hills at night. This is a key skill often overlooked by hill walkers, particulary when the winter nights start closing in and you find yourself on the hill a little behind schedule with night fast approaching!  It can be a beautiful experience especially when you get a fantastic night sky to match.
