Trekking in the Atlas Mountains - Morocco

A fantastic 6 day trip to Morocco, taking in two of it’s magnificent mountains, mount Toubkal which is the highest mountain in Morocco, standing at 4,167m and on the second day we climb mount Ras n'Ouanoukrim which is 4,083m.

Morocco is a beautiful and diverse place bursting with culture and life, and the local people the Berbers have a genuine hospitality and friendliness that is second to none. It’s mountain ranges, which span across three countries; Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia can be broken down into four general regions, the high Atlas, the Saharan Atlas, the Tell Atlas, and the Aures Mountains. We will be trekking in the high Atlas Mountains.

Our Accommodation

Because we will be based in the mountains for most of our trip, we will be using the refugees, which have been purposely built for nights away in the mountains. The first night will be in the village of Imlil at a very comfortable guesthouse run by local people. After this for the next three nights we will be staying in the refugee, which is excellently well equipped (better than most refuges in the alps!) with a full tuck shop, bunk beds with mattresses, and warm showers! The food is also excellent, and you will not go hungry! The dishes are locally sourced and cooked in the traditional Moroccan tagine style.
On the final night we will travel back to Marrakesh and stay at a lovely well earned four-star hotel, with the chance for people to see Marrakesh’s fantastic night markets!

Equipment

A full and detailed kit list will be sent out to you once booking has been confirmed, but you will be expected to bring items of clothing including full winter gear, as the mountains in the high Atlas usually keep their snow for most of the year. When we do the trek it is likely that you will need on some sections, an ice axe and crampons. Full training will be given on the free winter skills day, so don’t panic if you’ve never used these items before. And we will recap once we get going on the trek.

Travel

Cheap flights are available from Easyjet Manchester to Marrakesh, and other flights may be available. You should book your flight to arrive no later than 21.00. Transport will be provided from the airport to the guesthouse, and at the end of the trip back to Marrakesh and then to the airport. Mules and porters will be provided to carry your luggage up to the refugees and back down again.

Fitness & Experience

A reasonable ‘trekking’ fitness would be useful; so a few long walks in the hills would be a good idea before undertaking mount Toubkal. Training days are available on request please get in touch to arrange a day before your trip.
Because we are operating at 4,000m then there is no need to worry about the effects of altitude sickness. Although you may at times feel a little tired and breathless this is perfectly normal when trekking at this height, and because we will be sleeping overnight at altitude then your body acclimatizes day by day. The trek up mount Toubkal is not technical at all, and there are no climbing sections on the mountain
